My Bra Straps Slip

We all want to wear a comfortable bra whatever the occasion or whatever style of bra we choose. From everyday wear to special occasions, for sports activities or breast feeding, a comfortable, well fitting and supportive bra is top priority and what we all deserve. There is nothing worse than wearing a bra throughout the day with straps falling off the shoulders longing for the end of the day so you can take it off.

Why Do My Bra Straps Slip?

Do your bra straps keep falling down? Bra straps slipping is a common problem we hear about at AmpleBosom. This could just mean that your bra straps need adjusting or you are wearing the wrong size bra. If your bra straps fall your shoulders then the straps could be too loose, the cup size could be too small and the back size too big.

We have a few tips for you to try to help prevent bra straps falling off your shoulders, as slipping bra straps can be very annoying.

What To Do If Your Bra Straps Slip

Our bra specialists advise –  “Check straps are adjusted so not too loose, check hook fastening is on the middle hook, choose a bigger cup size.  If you have narrow shoulders, choose a bra style with straps closer to the neck as opposed to the shoulder. Look for a racer back style or a bra with a j hook so that you can make a centralised strap.”

What to look for – Straps should run parallel at the back and if you fasten your bra on the middle set of hooks, this aligns the straps correctly for maximum comforts.

You should be able to place one finger under the straps comfortably so they are not too tight or too loose.

The straps need to sit comfortably between the neck and shoulders.

Some bras have centre pull straps that help prevent the straps slipping off the shoulder.

Tips & advice for when my bra straps slip

Here are a few helpful tips to help avoid bra strap slippage....

Strap Advice

• Try shortening the straps on you bra to help to lift your bust. Make sure your straps are not too loose, try shortening them. Here is a tip for you. When tightening your straps, try slipping two fingers underneath the strap. Any tighter than this and you will get the dreaded shoulder dig in (this can hurt!) and any looser than this and your straps will slip. If your straps still slip then it may be time for a new bra or a different size or style. 

• If a bra has centre pull straps the straps are cut close to the neck rather than the shoulder edge. This will help to stop the straps from slipping.

• Bras with wide straps can help prevent the straps slipping. Choose a style with wider straps so it is more difficult for the straps to slip off the shoulders. Narrower shoulders or sloping shoulders might mean that a bra with wider straps suits you best.

• Try rigid straps and non stretch straps that don't stretch and are less likely to slip off the shoulder.

• Bras with specially designed tow back and angled ring connecting shoulder straps give central pull through the straps and prevent strap slippage.

• Try a bra with a J hook that can make your bra into a leotard back. This design holds the straps in place closer to the neck, so again there is less chance of strap slippage.

Bra Size Advice

• Check your cup size, this is a key cause of bra straps slipping. Too small a cup size will make your straps fall down.  Try a larger cup size.

• Check your band size – it may be too loose and large so that the straps don't sit in the correct place and fall off your shoulder. Try going down a band size.

Types Of Bra

• A bra with a racer back clip will help to hold the straps in place.

• A bra with a leotard back helps prevent slipping.

Other Bra Advice

• Ideally we would recommend fastening your bra on the middle set of hooks, this aligns the straps correctly for maximum comfort.

• How old is your bra? Bras can get tired. The elastic can stretch and get baggy which is bad news for your bra straps.  Be honest is it time to overhaul your underwear drawer and invest in some comfortable new bras? We recommend checking your bra every 6 to 9 months to check it still fits correctly and that it doesn't show signs of wear and tear that can affect the fit.

• Wash your bra in a cool wash so that it doesn't shrink in the wash.  Also placing your bra in a bra bag or a pillowcase when washing can help the bra from getting damaged in the wash. Read our care advice for washing bras.

How To Check A Bra Fits Well and Comfortably

A well fitting and supportive bra will be comfortable but how do you know if the bra is fitted correctly? We have put together a guide to help you find a well fitting bra.

1. Band – the band should be secure and level all the way round, not riding up at the back. The band should sit snug underneath the breast tissue.

2. Straps – the straps should run parallel at the back and take the weight from the shoulders. Straps should not dig into the shoulders. Adjust the shoulder straps to ensure they are neither too loose nor too tight. The straps should sit parallel at the back. When trying on a new bra always wriggle the shoulders to ensure the straps do not slip.

3. Cups – breasts should be comfortably enclosed in the cups. No bulging or gaping at the top or the sides. Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts.

4. Centre panel – the centre front fitting should be snug to the chest wall with no gaps or digging in.

5. Underarm – snug fit at the underarm, not too tight and not gaping.

6. Wires – if underwired the wires should lie flat. You should not be able to feel the wires when you move around and touch your toes. Stretch your arms towards the ceiling. When you bring your arms back down to your sides, the wires should not dig in.
