BRA PROBLEM - BRA CUPS OVERFLOW

Do your bra cups overflow? Do you pop out a bit at the top of your bra and feel like you have bra spillage? If so we have some helpful advice and tips from our team of bra specialists to help with this bra problem.

We all want to wear a comfortable bra whatever the occasion or whatever bra styles we choose. From everyday wear to special occasions, for sports activities or breast feeding, a comfortable, a well fitting and supportive bra is top priority and what we all deserve. There is nothing worse than wearing an ill fitting bra throughout the day with the bra digging in and your breast bulging over and that longing for the end of the day so you can take it off.

Bra cups that overflow are a sign that you're wearing the wrong bra size. The breasts should fit comfortably in the cups with no overflow or spillage. If your breasts bulge and spill out of your bra, or if the bra is wrinkling this can indicate that the cup size is too small for you or your bra may be cut too low for the size of your breasts, or that the cut is wrong for your breast shape.

Our bra specialists advise – “Increase the cup letter size by one. Try a cup size larger (E to F). Choose a new bra style, a full cup or fuller shaped bra that gives more coverage rather than a balcony shape or balconette bra. There are a wide range of bra styles to suit different breast shapes. Try a bra with a higher centre gore.”

What to look for – Breasts should be comfortably enclosed in the cups.

Tips & Advice When Your Bra Cups Overflow

Our bra specialists tips to try and resolve the bra cup overflowing are:

Check that your breasts are sitting in the cups correctly. Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts so the nipples are centralised and your breasts are fully encased in the cups. The breasts should be comfortably encased in the cups with no bulging or gaping at the top or the sides. If you still have some overflow then you may need to change your cup size.
If the cups on your bra are too full then try wearing a bra with a bigger cup size - increase the cup letter size by one. Try a cup size larger, or even two, so if you are a D try a DD or E.

IF BRA CUPS ARE TOO SMALL

Choose a different bra style, opt for a full cup or fuller shaped bra that gives more coverage rather than a balcony shape.
Try a bra with a higher centre panel. The Goddess Verity bra has a centre front that extends above the cup neckline. Take a look at the Goddess range as this brand has a number of bras with a higher centre panel.

If you have asymmetrical breasts, fit the bra cup to the larger breast rather than the smaller breast.

Try a bra with high apex cups to give fuller coverage.
Remeasure your cup size. Read our bra measuring guide for advice.
Adjust your bra - make sure your bra is fitted correctly so that the straps are adjusted so they are not too tight or too loose and make sure the bra band sits comfortably across the back and doesn't ride up or dig in, you may need to check the hooks at the back.
We recommend checking your bra every 6 to 9 months to check it still fits correctly and that it doesn't show signs of wear and tear that can affect the fit.
Wash your bra in a cool wash so that it doesn't shrink in the wash. Also placing your bra in a bra bag or a pillowcase when washing can help the bra from getting damaged in the wash. Read our care advice for washing bras.

HOW TO CHECK A BRA FITS WELL AND COMFORTABLY

A well fitting and supportive bra will be comfortable but how do you know if the bra is fitted correctly?

We have put together a guide to help you find a well fitting bra.

Band – the band should be secure and level all the way round, not riding up at the back. The band should sit snug underneath the breast tissue.
Straps – the straps should run parallel at the back and take the weight from the shoulders. Straps should not dig into the shoulders. Adjust the shoulder straps to ensure they are neither too loose nor too tight. The straps should sit parallel at the back. When trying on a new bra always wriggle the shoulders to ensure the straps do not slip.
Cups – breasts should be comfortably enclosed in the cups. No bulging or gaping at the top or the sides. Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts.
Centre panel – the centre front fitting should be snug to the chest wall with no gaps or digging in.
Underarm – snug fit at the underarm, not too tight and not gaping.
Wires – if underwired the wires should lie flat. You should not be able to feel the wires when you move around and touch your toes. Stretch your arms towards the ceiling. When you bring your arms back down to your sides, the wires should not dig in.
