Bra Band Riding Up

Why the bra band is riding up? Best advice and tips from our bra specialists when your bra band is incorrect.

WHY IS MY BRA RIDING UP MY BACK?

Bra band riding up - When a bra fits correctly it will be comfortable and supportive but if the back of your bra rides up and you are constantly tugging at it to stay in place then this is a sign that your bra does not fit properly.

Please give our team of bra specialists a call on 01439 798388 and they will be able to help you find a bra where the band will sit correctly and not ride up.

WHY DOES MY BRA RIDE UP MY BACK?

Why is the bra band riding up? - If the back of your bra band rides up and is sitting too high on your back then the back band may not be the correct size for you or the bra straps might be too tight.

The reason this happens is because the weight of the breasts is pulling down on the cups and straps and lifting the back upwards. It could also mean that the bra is too tight for you. We would recommend you to check your underbust mesurement and add 4 inch to find out your bra size.

Our bra specialists advise – “Adjust the hook and eye closure to adjust the band size, loosen bra straps or try a different band size to stop your bra riding up.”

What to look for – The back band should be firm and level all the way around the body. Fasten a new bra on its loosest hooks so that you can tighten it if it stretches over time.

Straps need to be adjusted to support the weight of your breasts and the straps should run parallel at the back.

TIPS & ADVICE TO RESOLVE A BRA BAND RIDING UP

Our bra specialists tips to try and resolve the bra band riding up are:

  • Adjust the hook and eye closure on the back band to fit tighter as the bra band isn't tight enough and not sitting in the correct place on your back.

  • If you've tightened the back band as tight as possible but it's still riding up at the back then the elastane in the bra band may have worn. You may need a new bra

  • Check your band size is correct if it is too small and tight then the back will ride up.

  • Loosen the straps, it is possible that they are too tight and pulling the bra up.

  • Try going down in the back band size eg: 40 to a 38. If your band size is too loose or large this can also lead to the back riding up. Check out our blog about sister bra sizes for help with finding bras in similar sizes.

  • If the cups are too small then the weight of the breasts could be pulling on the bra and making the bra ride up and the back band go up at the back. You may need to opt for a larger cup size eg: G to GG.

GENERAL BRA FITTING TIPS & CARE ADVICE

  • We recommend checking your bra every 6 to 9 months to check it still fits correctly and that it doesn't show signs of wear and tear that can affect the fit.

  • Wash your bra in a cool wash so that it doesn't shrink in the wash.  Also placing your bra in a bra bag or a pillowcase when washing can help the bra from getting damaged in the wash. Read our care advice for washing bras.

  • Check your size - you can remeasure your band and cup size at home following our helpful bra measuring guide for advice. Alternatively give our friendly team of bra specialists a call on 01439 798388. They will happily talk you through the bra measuring guide.

  • Have a bra fitting - arrange a bra fitting with one of our helpful team, give us a call on 01439 798 388 and we can arrange a day for you.

HOW TO CHECK A BRA FITS WELL AND COMFORTABLY

A well fitting and supportive bra will be comfortable but how do you know if the bra is fitted correctly? We have put together a guide to help you find a well fitting bra.

  1. Band – the band should be secure and level all the way round, not riding up at the back. The band should sit snug underneath the breast tissue.

  2. Straps – the straps should run parallel at the back and take the weight from the shoulders. Straps should not dig into the shoulders. Adjust the shoulder straps to ensure they are neither too loose nor too tight. The straps should sit parallel at the back. When trying on a new bra always wriggle the shoulders to ensure the straps do not slip.

  3. Cups – breasts should be comfortably enclosed in the cups. No bulging or gaping at the top or the sides. Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts.

  4. Centre panel - the centre front fitting should be snug to the chest wall with no gaps or digging in.

  5. Underarm - snug fit at the underarm, not too tight and not gaping.

  6. Wires – if underwired the wires should lie flat. You should not be able to feel the wires when you move around and touch your toes. Stretch your arms towards the ceiling. When you bring your arms back down to your sides, the wires should not dig in.
