Bra Fitting Guide: Tips To Find The Perfect Fit

Ample Bosom's Bra Fitting Guide: Tips To Find The Perfect Fit

We all want a comfortable, well fitting and supportive bra for everyday wear and whatever the occasion or whatever style of bra we choose. Different brands may fit differently, but having an understanding of the right bra size for you can serve as a general rule of thumb.

There is nothing worse than wearing an ill-fitting bra with wires poking into you, straps falling off the shoulders, bulging cups and band digging in.

To avoid these bra problems and to help you find a comfortable bra we’ve created this bra advice guide which offers hints and tips so you know if you're wearing the wrong bra size, and make sure your bra size fits properly so that it is comfortable and supportive.

How to Check Your Bra Fits Perfectly and Feels Comfortable

A well fitting and supportive bra will be comfortable but how do you know if the bra is fitted correctly? We have put together a guide to help you find a well fitting bra.

  1. Band – the band should be secure and level all the way round, not riding up at the back. The band should sit snug underneath the breast tissue.
  2. Straps – the straps should run parallel at the back and take the weight from the shoulders. Straps should not dig into the shoulders. Adjust the shoulder straps to ensure they are neither too loose nor too tight. The straps should sit parallel at the back. When trying on a new bra always wriggle the shoulders to ensure the straps do not slip.
  3. Cups – breasts should be comfortably enclosed in the cups. No bulging or gaping at the top or the sides. Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts.
  4. Centre panel - the centre front fitting should be snug to the chest wall with no gaps or digging in.
  5. Underarm - snug fit at the underarm, not too tight and no gaping cups.
  6. Wires – if underwired the wires should lie flat. You should not be able to feel the wires when you move around and touch your toes. Stretch your arms towards the ceiling. When you bring your arms back down to your sides, the wires should not dig in.

Best Methods to Try on a Bra for the Perfect Fit

When you try on a new bra for the first time, there are a few different methods we’d recommend to test whether it’s the right fit for you.

  • Put the bra on the outermost hook. A bra starts to give after being worn a few times, so you can use a tighter hook later on.
  • Adjust the shoulder straps to ensure they are neither too loose nor too tight. They should sit parallel at the back.
  • If the band feels too tight, try going up one band size (eg. 38 to 40)
  • If the cups feel too small, try going up one cup size (eg. E to F)
  • Wriggle your shoulders to ensure the straps don’t slip
  • Make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup

Frequently Asked Questions and Advice From Our Bra Specialists

Think you might be wearing the wrong size bra? We get a lot of questions from our customers about ill-fitting bras. Here are some of the questions we get asked the most and our advice on how to overcome these issues.

My breasts are not the same size, what should I do?

If you have breasts that are not the same size then this is not unusual, so please give our team a call on 01439 798388 and we can help fit a bra to your breasts.

Our bra specialists advise – “Fit the bra cup size to your larger breast. Try bras with stretchy or elasticated cups that will mould to your shape. Adjust the strap on the shorter side.”

What to look for –Both breasts should be comfortably encased in the cups with no bulging at the top or the sides, especially on the side with the larger bust. The straps should run parallel at the back and can be adjusted to help with the bra cup fit too.

Why does my bra ride up my back?

If the back of your bra band is riding up and sitting too high on your back then the back of the current bra band may be the wrong bra or wrong bra size for you, or the straps might be too tight.

Our bra specialists advise“Adjust the hook and eye closure to adjust the band size, loosen straps or try a different band size.”

What to look for – The band should be firm and level all the way around the body. Fasten a new bra on its outermost hooks so that you can tighten it if it stretches over time. Straps need to be adjusted to support the weight of your breasts and the straps should run parallel at the back.

Why does my bra curl up under the bust?

If your bra curls up under the bust it usually means the band size is too small.

Our bra specialists advise“Try a larger back size, avoid deeper bands and consider an underwired style.”

What to look for – The band should be firm and level all the way around the body. The centre panel should sit comfortably against the chest wall.

Why does my bra band dig in?

If your bra band digs into your side/back it could be the bra band fit is too small.

Our bra specialists advise” Try one band size larger (40 instead of 38), this may mean you need a smaller cup size. Alternatively, opt for a bra with a wider band.”

What to look for – The band should be firm and level all the way around the body as it makes up for more than 80% of the entire bra support. Make sure the underband sits under the breast tissue. Fasten a new bra on its outermost hooks so that it’s not too tight. A cushioned band can give comfort.

Why does my bra bulge at the sides?

If your bra bulges at the sides it could be the bra band is too narrow. Alternatively the bra band could be too small or the cup size is too small.

Our bra specialists advise” Try a larger band size (40 rather than 38) or try increasing the cup size by one letter or choose a style that provides more cup coverage.”

What to look for – The band should be firm and level all the way around the body and the breasts should be comfortably encased in the cup. Underarm tissue should not spill over the band in the right size.

Why do my bra cups overflow?

If your breasts bulge and spill out of your bra this can indicate that the cup size is too small for you or your bra may be cut too low for the size of your breasts.

Our bra specialists advise “Increase the cup letter size by one. Try a cup size larger (E to F). Choose a full cup or fuller shaped bra that gives more coverage rather than a balcony shape or a plunge bra. Try a bra with a higher centre gore to ensure the bra fits correctly.”

What to look for – In the right bra size, breasts should be comfortably encased in the cups.

Why do my bra cups pucker?

If your bra cups pucker or wrinkle at the tip then the bra cup could be too small.

Our bra specialists advise – “Try a bigger cup size, adjust the bra straps or try a balcony style bra. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts so the nipples are centralised and your breasts are fully encased in the cups.”

What to look for –  Breasts should be comfortably encased in the cups and straps should run parallel at the back. Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup.

Why does my bustline sag?

If your bustline sags then your bra straps and band may be too loose and the style of bra may need changing.

Our bra specialists advise –  “Try shortening the straps and avoid stretchy fabrics. Choose a firmer support style bra with rigid straps and cups with more sections as this will give more support. Check the band size is not too big.”

What to look for – You should be able to place one finger under the straps comfortably, the breasts should be encased in the cups comfortably and the band should be firm and level all the way around the body.

Why do the underwires poke out at the front?

If the underwires poke out at the front of your bra then your bra band may not be the correct size, if the band is too small the wires can poke out at the front and if the band is too large, the band moves which can cause the wires to pop out over time.

Our bra specialists advise –  “Try changing your band size. You could also increase the cup size (E to F). Alternatively try a non-wired soft cup style.”

What to look for – The underwires should lie flat and the band should be level all the way round with the breasts resting comfortably in the cups.

Why do the underwires dig in at the side of the breasts?

If the underwires dig into your breast at the side then your bra cup size could be too small.

Our bra specialists advise –  “Try increasing the cup size (E to F). Alternatively try a non-wired, non-padded bra style.”

What to look for – The underwires should lie flat and the breasts should be encased comfortably inside the cups and wired area. Different bras can have different shaped wires and bras with a shorter or flatter underwire won’t dig into the sides of the bust.

Why do my bra straps dig in and make my shoulders are sore?

Bra straps can dig into the shoulders and make them sore if the bra straps are too tight and your straps are not supporting the weight of your breasts. Also consider the cups size and style, if the cups are too small they can put pressure on the shoulders and a fuller cup style will fully encase the breasts giving them good support.

Our bra specialists advise –  “Loosen the bra straps or opt for a bra with wider, or padded cushioned straps. Try going up a cup size or a fuller cup to support the breasts. You may need a more supportive bra, look for one with side support panels and side bones.”

What to look for –  You should be able to place one finger under the straps comfortably so they are not too tight or too loose. The cups should be supporting the breasts so make sure they are fully encased. You may need a more supportive bra, look for one with fuller cups, plus side support panels and side bones.

Why do my bra straps slip off my shoulders?

If your bra straps slip then the straps could be too loose, the cup size could be too small and back size too big.

Our bra specialists advise –  “Check straps are adjusted so not too loose, check hook fastening is on the middle hook, choose a bigger cup size.  If you have narrow shoulders, choose a bra style with straps closer to the neck as opposed to the shoulder. Look for a racer back style or a bra with a j hook so that you can make a centralised strap.”

What to look for – Straps should run parallel at the back and if you fasten your bra on the middle set of hooks, this aligns the straps correctly for maximum comfort. You should be able to place one finger under the straps comfortably so they are not too tight or too loose. The straps need to sit comfortably between the neck and shoulders. Some bras have centre pull straps that help prevent the slipping.

Why does the centre panel of my bra gape and not lie flat?

If the centre panel of your bra gapes and does not lie flat then your bra cup may be too small and band size too big.

Our bra specialists advise –  “Try increasing the cup size and reducing the band size. Also try a stretchy fabric on the bra.”

What to look for – The centre panel should sit comfortably against the chest wall and there shouldn’t be skin on skin.

Why does my bust come out at the bottom of the bra?

Sally says, “If your breasts are coming out at the bottom of your bra,it could be something as simple as not putting your breasts correctly in the cups. Take your time and ensure you have done that first. If your bust is still coming out at the bottom of the bra, this could be a sign that your back band is too big and the cups are too small. Try a smaller back size and a bigger cup size, and make sure your back band is firm and level all the way round, with your breasts comfortably encased in the cup. Ensure your nipples are centralised - there should not be skin on skin.”

Why do the underwires dig into my ribcage?

If the underwires dig into your ribcage then your bra may be too small.

Our bra specialists advise –  “Try a larger band size so that the wires don’t dig in.”

What to look for –  The wires should lie flat, look out for a cushioned wire for extra comfort.

Why does my bra give me an East-West shape?

Sally says, “Some traditional bra styles may give you what’s known as an East-West shape, which can make you look wider. These bras are still popular, and some of our favourites are the Triumph Doreen and the Anita Comfort Jana. However, if you want to avoid this shape, a bra with side support will give your breasts a forward-facing shape, helping you to look slimmer.”

Which bra fabric is best for sensitive skin?

If you have sensitive skin or have any of the following conditions - eczema, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa or fibromyalgia then please get in touch as we can help you find a cotton bra or bra with soft, hypoallergenic fabric for sensitive skin so that the fabric doesn't irritate your skin.

Swimwear Fitting Guide

Swimsuit Tips and Advice & Swimwear Buying Guide

Whether shopping for a regular swimming costumes or holiday wear we all want to feel comfortable and confident in our choice of swimwear.

We want to help you find the right swimwear for your body shape so we’ve created this guide which offers hints and tips for making sure your swimwear fits properly.

HOW TO SIZE BRA SIZE SWIMSUITS

When choosing a swimsuit by bra size consider the following advice.

  • Swimsuits (and body corselettes) as a standard, are made for a size 5'5" tall person. So if you were this height you would choose your usual bra size for the swimsuit.

  • However if you are taller than 5'5" try a larger back size and a smaller cup size eg if your usual size is a 40D then try a 42C. If you are tall and need a longer length in the body of the swimsuit then you could try some of the tips our swimwear specialists advise in our blogpost Swimwear Tips If You Are Tall to find your correct size, and could check your body measurements on our size chart.

  • Alternatively if you are shorter than 5'5" then try a smaller back size and bigger cup size eg if your usual size is a 40D then try a 38E. Different shapes may need different sizes, If you are shorter or have a shorter torso and need a shorter length in the body of the swimsuit then you could try some of the tips our swimwear specialists advise in our blogpost Swimwear Tips For A Shorter Body

Swimwear Tips If You Are Tall

Swimsuits sold by bra size are for people who are 5’5″, so if you are taller and need a longer length in the body of the swimsuit then you could try the following tips.

Our swimwear specialists advise….

  • For a bra size swimsuit try a bigger band size and a smaller cup.
  • Choose a swimsuit with adjustable leg feature. We have a great range of swimsuits with adjustable legs.  Adjustable side ties will offer a customised leg coverage.
  • Choose swimwear with horizontal stripes as the stripes can appear to shorten the body.
  • Choose a two piece – either a bikini or a tankini. You don’t have to worry that the length of your swimwear is too short when wearing a bikini or a tankini.
  • Pick a tankini with an adjustable side feature so that if you are taller, the length can be altered and the bottom of the tankini sits where you want it to.

Swimwear Tips For A Shorter Body

All swimsuits are made for women 5’5″ which is a standard length so if you are shorter or have a shorter torso and need a shorter length in the body of the swimsuit then you could try the following tips.

Our swimwear specialists advise….

  • For a bra size swimsuit try a smaller band size and bigger cup.
  • Choose a two piece – either a bikini or a tankini. You don’t have to worry that the length of your swimwear is too long when wearing a bikini or a tankini.
  • Try a tankini top as they are not as restrictive as they will often sit lower than the top of your bikini briefs so you don’t feel like you have too much material bunching up around your body as you might do if a swimsuit is too long. The tankini top length will be longer on shorter bodies than taller figures so it just means the bottom of the tankini sits further down your body.
  • Pick a tankini with an adjustable side feature may help if you have a short torso as you are able to alter the length of the tankini with the adjustable feature, so the tankini length can be altered so that the bottom of the tankini sits where you want it to.
  • Choose a swimsuit with adjustable leg feature. Adjustable side ties may help if you have a short body as you are able to alter the length of the swimsuit with the adjustable feature.

Swimwear To Help Support the Bust

If you have a larger bust size you will want to make sure you have the right support from your swimwear. Here are some tips to help you choose swimwear to help support the bust.

Our swimwear specialists advise….

Swimwear To Help Hide Your Tummy

Do you feel a bit conscious of your tummy? We have some tips and recommendations of the best styles if you want to hide your tummy and make the tummy area appear flatter.

Our swimwear specialists advise….

  • Choose a tummy control swimsuit as they are perfect for those looking to ‘flatten’ or ‘smooth’ their appearance.
  • Try a shaping swimsuit with a double lined front as this lining will hold your curves in place and you will feel comfortable.
  • Pick a swimsuit in a flattering twist front style which has a light gathering to the front to smooth the tummy area.
  • An internal powernet panel can help to hold in your tummy area and give you a smooth silhouette to help with feeling supported.
  • tankini will cover your tummy area.
  • Skirted suits can help to hide the tummy area. Currently we don’t have any skirted swimsuits but we do have skirted briefs.
  • Wear a coverup –  pareo, sarong or kaftan to help cover the tummy area.
  • Black swimwear has a slimming effect.
  • Swimsuits with a gathered / ruched tummy area are very flattering.

Swimwear Tips If You Have A Full Bottom

If you have a full bottom but feel a bit self conscious then try our swimwear tips.

Our swimwear specialists advise….

  • Skirted suits or skirted bikini briefs can help to hide a fuller bottom if it is something you feel self-conscious about.
  • Wear separate pareos/sarongs to cover your bottom area, this way you can mix and match with your costume.
  • Choose a bikini brief style that skims the hips and bottom rather than frilly or fussy looks.
  • Try wearing black on the bottom half as this will help to give the illusion of a smaller bottom. Choose a two piece with a patterned top and complementary black bikini briefs.
  • Pick a swimsuit with a colourful cup area and dark block colour to the body of the costume to draw the attention away from the bottom and to give the illusion of a smaller bottom.
  • Adjustable leg bikini briefs can be adjusted to give more or less coverage.

How to Avoid Sagging Bottoms In Swimwear

A swimsuit or bikini briefs need to have a good fit around the bottom and do not want to be sagging.

Our swimwear specialists advise…

  • If the swimsuit is sagging around the bottom area then try choosing a smaller back size and a bigger cup to accommodate the bust and give the bottom a snug fit.
  • Shop for swimwear bottoms that cover the important areas and fit snugly but not too tightly.
  • Make sure the fit is right when you first buy the swimsuit or bikini. Give us a call on 01439 798388 to arrange a swimsuit fitting.
  • If you are buying a two piece you may need to buy a smaller size in the bikini bottoms.
  • If you like wearing a swimsuit but you find that they are too large on the bottom half then try swimsuits with adjustable legs and ties. You can make a swimsuit  smaller on the bottom half by adjusting the leg ties. Fantasie Swim have a great range of swimsuits with adjustable legs.
  • Bikini briefs with adjustable ties can also help make your bottoms smaller and avoid a sagging look.
  • If you’ve got larger hips, go with a bottom with adjustable ties, that can accommodate your shape.

Here at AmpleBosom.com we cater for a range of all shapes and sizes so if you have a small bust here are a few tips to help you find swimwear to compliment your figure.

  • Swimwear or a swimsuit that gathers on the side or with ruching in the middle can create an illusion of a smaller waist.
  • Choose a two-piece tankini or bikini that combines a block coloured top with a patterned bikini bottom as this half will help to balance out your figure.
  • High waisted bikini briefs with control panels can flatten your tummy and smooth out your silhouette.
  • Try a one piece swimsuit with a colourful top and a plain bottom to draw the emphasis away from the waist region.
  • Colourful curved side panels in a swimming costume can also help give the effect of a more streamlined body from the front and rear view.

  • Avoid mix and match tops and bottoms as different colours can make your body look disproportional.

  • For a slimmer looking silhouette, choose darker colours.
  • Horizontal stripes widen the shoulders and, if paired with matching bottoms, draw emphasis to the waist.
  • Choose all over colours and prints to keep you evenly balanced.

Our swimwear specialists advise….

  • Go for something with a little detail around the bustline. This will draw the attention upwards and away from your hips.
  • Choose decorative necklines to help draw the eye upwards.
  • Wear a two piece so you can get the the bra size for the top and dress size for the bottoms to fit your size.
  • Darker bottom halves with patterned/printed tops will flatter.
  • Stick with larger prints with dark-coloured bases.
  • Try hipster bottoms so that they don’t emphasise your bottom.
  • Choose tie side briefs as this helps to eliminate hip bulge.

Swimwear Tips For An Athletic Figure

Athletic bodies tend to have a similar width to their shoulders, waist and hips. Here are some tips to help you choose swimwear to compliment the athletic figure.

Our swimwear specialists advise….

  • Wrap swimsuits will help to create a waistline.
  • Swimsuits with detail around the waist will create a waistline.
  • To enhance your hips try going for something with detail, like rings on the hips of a bikini brief.
  • To enhance the bust try something with horizontal stripes across the bustline.
  • Try a lightly padded swimsuit top or bikini top to enhance the bust area.

Swimwear Care Advice & Washing Tips

  • Try to avoid using tanning products with a lot of oil in them as this will break down the elastic in the swimsuit.
  • Chlorine in a swimming pool or the ocean can also stretch a swimsuit and make it sag.
  • As soon as you finish your swim and leave the water or swimming pool, it is a good idea to rinse the garment in order to remove salt, minerals or chlorine.
  • Try to wash your swimwear straight away after a swim.
  • If possible, always wash in cold water, if you use the washing machine, use the hand wash/gentle cycle and put it in a mesh bag.
  • Do not use fabric softener as this can breakdown the elastane.
  • Don’t put a swimsuit into the dryer – it will only break down the elastic, so always try to hang dry.
  • Think about how long you’ve had your swimwear as swimsuits stretch out overtime.

There are lots of different bra shapes and different bra styles on the market. To make sure your bra is as comfortable as possible, it’s important to choose a style that suits your shape and size. If you're looking for a bra to wear with strapless outfits or one to wear with a top that has a sweetheart neckline, then not to worry, we've got you!

Click on our shop now button to browse our extensive collection of comfortable, well fitting and supportive bras in a range of styles.

With so many different bra styles out there, and it can be hard to know which one is the best for you.

Our bra style guide explains the different features and benefits of the wide range of styles we offer.

Full Cup Bra

Full Cup Bra

A full-cup bra offers full coverage of the breast and creates a smooth silhouette under clothes.

Full cup bras are perfect for everyday wear and look great under most tops, creating a smooth natural shape.

This type of bra offers great support and suits every body shape and size.

The Goddess Keira Wired Bra is pictured here, is a popular full cup bra for everyday wear.

Balcony / Half Cup Bra

Balcony Half Cup Bra

A half cup bra is also known as a demi bra or balcony bra creates a boosting effect and rounded breast shape, while also supporting the breasts.

With less coverage than a full-cup style, a balcony bra gives maximum uplift to lift your cleavage underneath as it is usually an underwire bra, whilst also offering maximum comfort.

This is the besy selling Empreinte Thalia Low Necked Bra pictured here.

Plunge Bra

Plunge Bra

Plunge bras have a low centre that works perfectly under low cut tops, dresses or blouses for a more seductive look, and is an excellent addition to any lingerie drawer.

The plunge bra helps create a beautiful cleavage and breast shape.

Pictured is the one of our favourite bras, the Elomi Matilda Plunge Bra

Soft Cup Bra

Soft Cup Bra

A soft-cup bra doesn’t have any wires under the cups and offers gentle support.

This bra naturally shapes and comforts the breasts, making it extremely comfortable.

Take a look at the Anita Rosa Faia Twin Non Wired Bra for all day comfort.

Underwired Bra

Underwired Bra

An underwired bra is exactly what it says on the tin – a bra with a covered wire under the cups.

Underwired bras create a smooth and sleek shape for the breasts and can be either padded or unpadded, providing all the support you need.

The Elomi Cate Banded Bra is a popular underwired bra.

Bandless Bra

A bandless bra is a type of bra that features a unique design where the traditional under band or band below the cups is either very narrow or completely absent.

This design sets bandless bras apart from standard bras, which typically have a wider under band that encircles the ribcage. Bandless bras are often chosen for their comfort.

The lack of a wide under band means there is no material that can dig into the ribcage, making them a good choice for those who find traditional underbands uncomfortable.

The Triumph Comfort Minimiser W Bra is the perfect example of a bandless bra.

Strapless Bra

Strapless Bra

A strapless bra is designed to be worn under strapless tops and dresses.

Strapless bras can also come in multiway bra form.

Elomi's Smooth Underwired Moulded Cup Straplesss Bra comes with detachable and adjustable straps so that it can be worn strapless, cross back or traditional parellel style.

Strapless bras often have added design features to prevent slipping and add support.

T-shirt Bra

T-shirt bra

A t-shirt bra is a seamless or flat seamed bra with slightly padded cups ensure the nipples don’t show through when a tight top or dress is worn.

T-shirt bras are often supportive bras with a fuller cup that are underwired to shape the breasts but they can also be non wired like the Anita Comfort Clara Comfort Soft Cup Moulded Bra.

Front Fastening Bra

Front Fastening Bra

A front-fastening bra has a hook between the cups making it easier to get on and off and perfect for low-cut tops.

A lot of the front fastening bras we stock at AmpleBosom offer a great full coverage look and are wide strap bras.

One of our best selling front fastening bra is pictured here - the Glamorise Magic Lift Front Fastening Posture Bra.

Longline Bra

Longline Bra

A longline bra extends below the usual bust band and has panels along the midriff to help smooth the waist.

This style is excellent as it offers body shaping and breast support all in one, making it perfect to wear as an undergarment under your favourite dress.

Longline bras can come in half or full coverage bras.

Minimiser Bra

Minimiser bras are designed to help give the appearance of a smaller bust.

They work by either compressing the bust or redistributing the breast tissue within the cup, perfect for those looking to smooth their silhouette and look.

Pictured here is the best selling Glamorise Magic Lift Plus Size Minimiser Bra.

Moulded Bra

Moulded Bra

A moulded bra provides seamless cups from a single piece of fabric.

Seamless bras are popular for the moderate amount of support and comfort they offer.

Either padded or non-padded, the bra gives a smoother look under t-shirts.

The Elomi Smooth Underwired Moulded Cup Bra pictured here, gives a seamless look and a good shape.

Multi-way Bra

Multiway Bra

A multi-way bra can be worn in many ways thanks to its useful adjustable and removable straps.

The versatile straps can be detached for a strapless, worn as a halter neck or crossed over at the back.

This style can be found as a full cup bra, plunge bra, half cup or balconette bra.

The Empreinte Cassiopee Spacer Underwired Bra comes highly recommended.

Nursing Bra

Nursing Bra

A nursing or maternity bra’s cups can be dropped down to facilitate breast feeding.

When going through nursing, you'll probably spend a lot of time wearing nursing bras so its important that this style is supportive and comfortable, even without wiring.

Take a look at the Elomi Molly Underwired Nursing Bra pictured here.

Padded Bra

Padded Bra

A padded bra adds size and definition to the cleavage with a thicker lining to the cups and a rounded shape.

Padded bras can be perfect for when you want some extra lift in your breasts, for example when wearing a push up bra to enhance cleavage.

The Anita Rosa Faia Lace Rose Non Wired Contour T-shirt Bra has lightly padded wirefree cups.

Post-Surgery Bra

Post Surgery Bra

A post-surgery bra is designed to give confidence and support after surgery.

In comparison to the usual bra, the soft cups do not rub against sensitive skin and features such as natural pockets and prosthetics can be added to provide shape and fullness where desired.

Take a look at the Anita Care Lotta Soft Cup Pocketed Bra.

Pull-On Bra

A pull-on bra is a crop top/bralette style bra that has no wires or back fastenings.

This bra gets its name from its ability to be pulled on over the head.

Unlike traditional bras with hooks or clasps, a pull-on bra is crafted with stretchy, flexible materials that allow the wearer to slip it on over their head or step into it, eliminating the need for fasteners.

Pull-on bras typically have a seamless construction and are made from breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics to ensure comfort during daily wear.

Take a look at the Fantasie Smoothease Soft Cup Pull On Bralette.

Push-up Bra

Push Up Bra

A push-up bra is designed to push the breasts inwards and upwards, providing maximum uplift for a better shaped and fuller, more seductive cleavage.

Push-up bras come in all shapes and sizes such as plunge, balconette and sweatheart neckline so that you can find the perfect bra to wear under your going out top!

Racerback Bra

Racer Back Bra

A racerback bra has a y-shaped back that curves in-between the shoulder blades to give an extra bit of style and sleekness to the back.

Racerback bras often feature a J-clip or detachable straps that can be worn crossed at the back.

This style is really helpful for stopping your bra straps slipping as they sit high to create a halter neck look.

The Glamorise Complete Comfort T Back Bra is the perfect example of a racer back bra.

Sleep Bra

A sleep bra is a specialized type of bra designed for nighttime wear. Its primary purpose is to provide gentle support and comfort to the breasts while sleeping.

Unlike traditional bras, sleep bras are typically wireless and free of underwires, hooks, or clasps to ensure maximum comfort during rest.

Sleep bras are usually made from soft, breathable, and stretchy materials like cotton, modal, or a blend of fabrics.

These materials are chosen to minimize irritation and ensure a comfortable fit.

The Anita Comfort Seamless Sleep Bra pictured here, is a comfortable pull on sleep bra.

Sports Bra

Sports Bra

Sports bras are designed to provide comfort and support during exercise.

Most sports bras have a support level rating and are recommended for different sporting activities.

The design holds breasts close to the chest for minimum movement and maximum comfort.

Dependent on the style, sports bras often come with removable padding so that you can customise the shape.

Most provide motion control as well as the ability to wick away moisture to keep you cool and dry.

A sports bra is also suitable for people who have had heart or breast surgery.

The Elomi Energise Sports Bra comes highly recommended.

Basque / Bustier

Basque Bustier

A basque or bustier is a top which offers bra-like support with full torso shaping underneath clothing.

This is the perfect style if you're looking for a more structured look in an outfit.

Designed to slim and smooth your figure whilst also shaping the breasts.

Body / Corselette

Body Corselette

A body or corselette is a combination of a girdle and a bra.

This style is designed to improve the outline of your body and breasts whilst providing lift and also making you look slimmer.

This style can either have a non wired bra section or an underwired bra section, depending on your personal bra style preference.

Take a look at the Anita Comfort Clara Corselette pictured here.

Tai

A tai knicker sits high on your waist, adding a slimming and curving effect to the body. The high rise above the legs creates a seamless and sensual look under any outfit. Sloggi Double Comfort Tai Briefs are a popular choice for comfort and fit.

A thong has a small triangle at the back which tapers into a string, banishing any visible panty line, making it perfect for under any tight-fitting outfit. Pictured is the popular Empreinte Thalia thong

A G-string leaves the bottom bare like a thong, but instead has only a string at the back for minimal coverage. Wear a G-string for special occasions when you want to avoid any visible lines under clothes.

Corselette and Bodyshaper Fitting Guide

Corselette and Bodyshaper Fitting Guide

A corselette or bodyshaper is an all-in-one lingerie piece that combines a bra with a corset panty girdle. Sometimes referred to as shapewear, a bodysuit or body, these items are designed to outline your figure and smooth your silhouette – the perfect lingerie for a special occasion.

If you're struggling to find shapewear that will work for you, browse this handy guide. Whether you want comfort, to slim your curves or accentuate the waist, we're sure in time you'll be able to find the right style here at AmpleBosom.

Corselettes are made to a standard size to fit women who are 5 foot 5 inches and sizing is usually by bra size rather than dress size, often making it difficult for petite women under 5 foot 5 inches or tall ladies to find a corselette or bodyshaper that fits them correctly, which is why we've created this helpful guide!

Fitting Guide

If you are around 5’5″ in height, you can start by choosing your bra size. Find your correct bra size by using our easy bra measuring guide with a tape measure and a pen and paper to note down your measurements.

If you need any guidance on the measuring steps, contact us via telephone on 01439 798388 or email us here, we are happy to advise.

Features of a Well Fitting Corselette and Bodyshaper

Corselette Fitting Guide

  • The straps should run parallel at the back. They can be adjustable, non-stretch or wide comfort straps.
  • An integrated bra or lined bust area will help support the breasts.
  • Some bodysuits don’t have full cups or an integrated bra, so a bra may need to be worn under the bodysuit for extra support.
  • Moulded preformed or seamless cups help give a smooth look.
  • If there is wiring on the chest section, the wires should lie flat and not dig in.
  • The corset part of the shapewear should not dig into your midriff and waist.
  • The body should cover your bottom well and not feel stretched or as if it’s pulling on your bottom and shoulders.
  • You should be able to fasten the popper fastening comfortably and it shouldn’t dig in.
  • Made from strong microfibre or spanx to firmly hold and support the tummy section.

Understanding Letter Bra Sizes for a Comfortable Fit

Many lingerie brands, including Anita, use a letter sizing system instead of traditional band and cup sizes. Their bras are available in sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL. To help you find the best fit, please use our table below and convert your bra size to the appropriate letter size.

It’s important to note that this sizing system does not include double cup sizes (e.g., DD), which may lead to a smaller fit compared to traditional sizes. If you usually wear a double cup size and are considering a bra with letter sizing, feel free to call our friendly team on 01439 798388 for personalised advice.

Bra Measuring Guide - How to Accurately Measure Your Bra Size for the Perfect Fit

Bra Measuring Guide: How to Accurately Measure Your Bra Size For The Perfect Fit

Why You Need a Bra Measuring Guide: Finding Your Perfect Fit at Home

We understand that booking a bra fitting appointment can feel overwhelming, so we’ve created this step-by-step bra sizing measuring guide to help you measure your bra size at home.

Comfort begins with knowing your correct measurements for both band and cup size. Follow our easy instructions to shop confidently for your next bra, whether it’s a t-shirt bra, sports bra, or full coverage bra from our collection.

For information on US or European sizes, visit our Bra Size Guide.

How to Accurately Measure Your Bra Size: Step-by-Step Guide

Bra Measuring Guide

To check your bra size, you need two measurements underbust and overbust.

How to Measure Your Underbust Correctly for Accurate Band Size (Underbust Measurement - Back Size)

Ensuring your bra band fits correctly and comfortably is key to discovering your bra size, especially for plus-size women who need extra support. We always recommend wearing your bra on the loosest hook to begin with. As the fabric gives over time, you can wear the bra on a tighter hook. If you find the bra straps are slipping off your shoulders, the band rides up your back, or you’re experiencing bulging or rubbing under your arms, this could be an indication that your band size is too big or too small.

Here's how to measure your band size:

  1. Using a soft tape measure, measure directly under your bust in inches, keeping it snug and level around your body.
  2. If the measurement is an even number, add 4 inches.
  3. If the measurement is an odd number, add 5 inches.

For example, if your measurement is 36 inches, add 4 inches for a 40 band size.

Sally says every daughter puts her mother in a bra that's too small, if you are sure you don't need to add the extra then don't, but if your bra is uncomfortable, especially at night, then please follow the guide in the first instance or give us a call on 01439 798388.

How to Measure Your Overbust Correctly for Accurate Cup Size (Overbust Measurement – Bust Size)

To achieve the best bra fit for larger busts, it’s important to measure your cup size correctly. A well-fitted cup should provide maximum support without spillage or gaping. We always recommend wearing your best fitting bra to measure your cup size - don’t do it without wearing a bra.

Here's how to measure your cup size:

  1. Make sure you’re wearing your best fitting bra.
  2. Using a soft tape measure, measure the fullest part of your bust, ensuring it's level around your body.
  3. If this measurement is 1 inch more than your overbust, your cup size is A.
  4. For every inch difference between your underbust and overbust, your cup size increases by one.
  5. An increase of 2 inches equals a B cup, 3 inches equals a C cup, and so on.

For example, if your underbust measures 29 inches and your bust measures 34 inches, that's an additional 5 inches, making you a DD cup size.

Bra Cup Size Chart & Conversion Guide: Find Your Perfect Fit

Different bra manufacturers may use different sizing methods, meaning the size that fits you perfectly in one brand might not translate to the right size in another brand.

Use our bra size chart below to discover your cup size in the lingerie brands we carry.

Bra Cup Sizes By Brand And Differences In Inches

Remember, finding the right bra size isn’t just about measurements; it’s influenced by other factors like body shape, breast shape, age, bra style, and brand. We recommend using both our guide and your own experience to find a bra you feel comfortable in. For personalised advice, consider booking a custom bra fitting online or by calling us on 01439 798 388.

Royal Mail now offers a collection service. A parcel can be collected from your choice of address. Please click here if you would like to use the service.

How long do I have to return an item?

60 days, the items must be unworn with all original tags attached and can be retruned for either a refund or exchange.

How do I return an item?

The simpliest way to return an item is using the Royal Mail Collection service mentioned above.

Our returns procedure is on the back of each invoice you receive.

Please complete the ‘Returns Form’ on the back of the invoice.

You can return goods for an exchange or a refund.

Do I need to pay for return postage?

Please put the correct postage on return parcels and we recommend getting proof of postage. If you can’t get to the post office then you can send the item back without any postage on and we will deduct the price of the postage plus the £1.50 Royal Mail handling charge from the cost of the returned item.

Do I need proof of postage?

We would recommend that you obtain a proof of postage.

How will I be refunded?

Your refund will be processed by the same method you paid for your order, this will be processed once we have received them at our offices. We ask that you allow up to 21 days for your account to be credited – but we will work as hard as we can to credit your account before this time.

Exchanging A Return

Additional payment will be needed for exchanges that are higher in value than the returned goods.

Returns Guarantee

We guarantee to refund or exchange goods if you are not entirely satisfied. We ask only that non-faulty items should be returned unworn and with all original tags attached. Any item returned must be in the same condition it was received. We would like to ask customers to take care when trying on garments. Your statutory rights are not affected.
