Why Does My Bustline Sags?
Does your bustline sag? If so it can be a sign that you may need to change the style of bra you are wearing or your bra straps may be too loose and band size may be too large.
Our team of experienced bra specialists have written some tips to help you avoid a sagging bustline with some bra recommendations, as we want everyone to look and feel confident and comfortable in their bra everyday, whatever the occasion.
What To Do If Your Bustline Sags
If your bustline sags our bra specialists advise – “Try shortening the straps and avoid stretchy fabrics. Choose a firmer support style bra with rigid straps and cups with more sections as this will give more support. Check the band size is not too big.”
What to look for – You should be able to place one finger under the straps comfortably, the breasts should be encased in the cups comfortably and the band should be firm and level all the way around the body.
Tips to Help Avoid A Sagging Bustline
Here are some helpful tips to help avoid a sagging bustline from our bra specialists who are always on hand to advise.
Strap Advice
- Try shortening the bra straps on you bra to help to lift your bust.
- Wear a bra that has bigger straps as this can help to support the bust.
- A bra with front adjustable straps helps to lift the bust.
- Try rigid straps and non stretch bra straps that give support and don't stretch with the weight of the breasts.
Bra Fabric
- Avoid bras made from stretchy fabric as the stretchy material can help the bustline to sag and won't give enough support to the breasts.
- Choose a bra with supportive fabric or a sports bra to give more support to the bust. Some sports bras can be worn as an everyday bra for all day wear, giving you the support and comfort you need.
- Choose a cotton bra as cotton fabric won't stretch.
The Cups
- Try a full cup bra rather than a low necked bra or plunge bra, as the full cup bra will encase the breasts to give good bust shape and support to fuller breasts.
- Try wearing a bra that has a 3 sectioned cups as this will give more support.
- Avoid seamless styles. Go for cups with seams as these bras will offer more lift and shape to help avoid a sagging bust.
- Look for a bra with an elastic edge to the top of the cup as if you have lost some volume in the top of your breast this will give a smooth line.
Types of Bras
- Try a firmer support bra that will give added support to the bust.
- A bra with lots of hooks in the back can also help to prevent a sagging bustline.
Other Bra Advice
- Check your band size - it may be too loose and large so not giving you the support you need. Try going down a band size.
- Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts so the nipples are centralised and your breasts are fully encased in the cups.
- We recommend checking your bra every 6 to 9 months to check it still fits correctly and that it doesn’t show signs of wear and tear that can affect the fit.
- Wash your bra in a cool wash so that it doesn’t shrink in the wash. Also placing your bra in a bra bag or a pillowcase when washing can help the bra from getting damaged in the wash. Read our care advice for washing bras.
- Check your size – you can remeasure your band and cup size at home following our helpful bra measuring guide for advice.

Your bustline should not sag. It is good to check that your bra fits well and comfortably, here is a handy guide.
How To Check A Bra Fits Well and Comfortably
A well fitting and supportive bra will be comfortable but how do you know if the bra is fitted correctly? We have put together a guide to help you find a well fitting bra.
- Straps – the straps should run parallel at the back and take the weight from the shoulders. Straps should not dig into the shoulders.
- Underarm – snug fit at the underarm, not too tight and not gaping.
- Cups – breasts should be comfortably encased in the cups with no bulging or gaping at the top or the sides.
- Centre panel – the centre front fitting should be snug to the chest wall with no gaps or digging in.
- Band – the band should be secure and level all the way round, not riding up at the back. The band should sit snug underneath the breast tissue.
- Wires – if underwired the wires should lie flat. You should not be able to feel the wires when you move around and touch your toes. If you stretch your arms towards the ceiling the wires should not dig in when you bring your arms back down to your sides.
