Underwires Popping Out Of Your Bra

Do you find that the underwires pop out of your bra? Have you ever felt that strange sensation of the wire from your bra poking into your skin? Or picked up your bra from the laundry basket to discover a hole with the underwire protruding? Wire poking out of bra.

It happens to the best of us as Sally was wearing a brand new bra the other day and the wire just popped out!

At least Sally was in the right place and it's just as well we could sort it out for her!

How To Stop Underwires From Popping Out Of Your Bra

In this blogpost we'll look at why underwires poke out at the front and ways you can prevent it!

Reasons You Can See Your Bra Underwire

  • When the underwires pop out of the underwired bra it is often a sign that the bra band size is not correct.
  • If the band size is too tight then the underwires are placed under pressure and may poke out the front overtime.
  • Alternatively if the band is too large and moving around the body, this friction wears down the casing or underwire channelling and this can create a hole for the wire to pop out.
  • Another reason why the wires may pop out is due to the manufacture or care of the bra. The fabric sewn over underwires inside a bra, called channelling, is sometimes made of cotton. The manufacturer may not have sewn enough stitches to close the underwire channel and the underwire has been able to pop out.
  • Also washing your bra in hot water can shrink the channelling and force the underwire to pop out. Our bra specialists have put together care advice for washing and drying your bras so have a read today.

How To Prevent The Underwire From Popping Out Of Your Bra

Here are a few helpful tips to help prevent the underwires from poking out of the front of your bra:

Bra Sizing Tips
  • Re-measure your bra band size and either try increasing the band size so that it is not too tight or try reducing the band size so it’s tighter and firmer.
  • Make sure the band is sitting flat under the breast tissue and that you don't have skin on skin.
  • Re-measure your cup size to check that the cup size is not too small and possibly increase the bra cup size by one letter.
  • Ensure the breasts are fully encased within the cups. If the breasts don't sit in the cups correctly they will put pressure on the underwires and this could lead to them popping out.
  • Check your size and use our helpful bra measuring guide to help you get the right band and cup size. Alternatively give our friendly team of bra specialists a call on 01439 798388. They will happily talk you through the bra measuring guide.

Advice About The Bra

  • Check the channelling has enough stitches to hold the underwire and consider sewing the channelling if required.
  • Consider changing the style of bra to a soft cup bra without underwires (non-wired bra).
  • Consider the age of your bra – the elastic in the straps can become too stretched and loose after a period of time so it may be time to invest in a new bra.
  • We recommend checking your bra every 6 to 9 months to check it still fits correctly and that it doesn’t show signs of wear and tear that can affect the fit.
  • Wash your bra in a cool wash so that it doesn’t shrink in the wash.  Also placing your bra in a bra bag or a pillowcase when washing can help the bra from getting damaged in the wash. Read our care advice for washing bras.
  • What to look for – The underwires should lie flat and the band should be level all the way round with the breasts encased comfortably in the cups.

How To Check A Bra Fits Well and Comfortably

A well fitting and supportive bra will be comfortable but how do you know if the bra is fitted correctly? We have put together a guide to help you find a well fitting bra.

Bra Fitting Guide - How To Check A Bra Fits Well & Comfortably

  1. Band – the band should be secure and level all the way round, not riding up at the back. The band should sit snug underneath the breast tissue if the band size is correct.

  2. Straps – the straps should run parallel at the back and take the weight from the shoulders. Straps should not dig into the shoulders. Adjust the shoulder straps to ensure they are neither too loose nor too tight. The straps should sit parallel at the back. When trying on a new bra always wriggle the shoulders to ensure the straps do not slip.

  3. Cups – breasts should be comfortably enclosed in the cups. No bulging or gaping at the top or the sides. Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts.

  4. Centre panel - the centre front fitting should be snug to the chest wall with no gaps or digging in.

  5. Underarm - snug fit at the underarm, not too tight and not gaping.

  6. Wires – if underwired the wires should lie flat. You should not be able to feel the wires when you move around and touch your toes. Stretch your arms towards the ceiling. When you bring your arms back down to your sides, the wires should not dig in.
