BRA PROBLEM - WHY DO BRAS BULGE AT THE SIDES?
If you have unwanted bra bulge at the sides it could be the bra band is too narrow. Alternatively the bra band size could be too small or the bra cup size is too small.
Our bra specialists advise – ” Try a deeper band or larger band size (40 rather than 38) or try increasing the cup size by one letter or choose a style that provides more cup coverage.”
What to look for– The band should be firm and level all the way around the upper body and the breasts should be comfortably encased in the cup. Underarm tissue should not spill over the band.
ADVICE & TIPS TO HELP GET A COMFORTABLE WELL FITTING BRA
Our bra specialists tips to eliminate bra bulge.
-
As a starting position, you could be wearing the incorrect bra size. Check the band size is correct for you - try a larger band size(40 rather than 38) if the band is too tight and is digging in and rippling. The band should lay flat around the body and there shouldn't be flesh bulging above or below the band. Read our bra measuring guide for advice about measuring your bra size.
-
You could be wearing the wrong cup size - If the cups on your bra are too full and your bra bulges then try wearing a bra with a bigger cup size - increase the cup letter size by one.
-
As the bra/ band is graded to the cup size, the larger the cup the deeper the band so no overspill.
-
On larger cup sizes the bra hooks should increase to give a smooth band with no overspill, bra bulge or back bulge.
-
Always make sure the nipples are centralised in the cup. Put your hand inside the cup and lift and sweep the breasts so the nipples are centralised and your breasts are fully encased in the cups. The breasts should be comfortably encased in the cups with no bulging or gaping at the top of the bra or the sides. If you still have some bulging then you may need to change your cup size.
-
Check the bra straps are adjusted and fit correctly, so that they are not too tight or too loose. Make sure they are not pulling on the band.
LOOKING AT THE Bra Style
-
To reduce bra bulge, try a bra style with a deeper/wider band as this will give more support and a smoother look. Make sure the bra band sits comfortably across the back and doesn't ride up or dig in.
-
A bra with side supportive panel can help shape and support at the side of the bust. For firmer side support panels take a look at Anita Safina and Goddess Verity.
- Choose a style that provides more cup coverage so the bust is fully and comfortably encased and doesn't bulge or spill over the bra under the arms. For deeper cups take a look at the Royce Luna or Anita Jana.
-
Look for bras that are slightly elasticated under the arms like Magic lift bras - for non wired, and Elomi bras for underwired.
GENERAL BRA FITTING TIPS & ADVICE
-
We recommend checking your bra every 6 to 9 months to check it still fits correctly and that it doesn't show signs of wear and tear that can affect the fit.
-
Wash your bra in a cool wash so that it doesn't shrink in the wash. Placing your bra in a bra bag or a pillowcase when washing, can help the bra from getting damaged in the wash. Read our care advice for washing bras
