Swimwear care advice and tips for washing and drying your swimwear so that it lasts.

Swimwear Care Advice & Washing Tips

Before we start...if you have the time to read this blog then could you have the time to hand wash your swimwear? If you want to go and do that instead of reading on then that's ok with us, we don't mind. Just so you know, if you don't handwash, unfortunately manufacturers may not guarantee to fix damage as this may have been caused by the washing process.

There are plenty of techniques you can use to keep your swimwear in tip top shape, such as handwashing, using gentle laundry detergents, staying away from body oils and putting your swimsuits on a delicate cycle when using the washing machine, but we have narrowed down all of our favourite and most useful tips in this handy guide!

Here at AmpleBosom.com we are often asked about care advice for swimsuits and swimwear.  Different swimwear products are made of different fabrics and materials, so it is important to follow the care advice on your swimwear label.

Swimwear Care Guide

Our swimwear specialists have put together some swimwear care advice and washing tips which we hope you find useful.

Why wash swimwear with cold water & how to dry

If possible, always wash in cool water and if you use the washing machine, use the hand wash/gentle cycle and put your swimwear in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase. Do not use fabric softener as this can break down the elastane.

Try to wash your swimwear straight away after a swim. This can be done with a gentle detergent to minimise any damage to your swimsuits and bikini's and help with textile conservation. After washing, simply hang it to dry in natural light until fully dry rather than placing it in a drying machine, as this could potentially shrink the swimsuit rather than give it a longer lifespan.

Don't put a swimsuit into the dryer - it will only break down the elastic and natural fibres, so always try to air dry your swimwear. Wash your bikini top with hooks and fastenings separately from other items so they don't snag or get pulled. You can use a pillow case or a mesh bag for this.

Avoid using tanning products with a lot of oil in them as this will break down the elastic in the swimsuit. Instead of using tanning oils, go for a water based SPF that will not only protect your skin, but your swimsuit too.

Gentle detergent and products to use

Using baking soda to wash your swimsuits is an excellent and affordable alternative to washing detergent if you've forgotten to bring some with you on your holiday. Baking soda can help to remove odour and brighten the swimsuit colours.

Unfortunately, chlorine and pool chemicals in a swimming pool or the ocean can also stretch a swimsuit and make it sag. This is why it is important to rinse off your swimsuit with cold water after every swim, as this will ensure you remove all salt, minerals and chlorine from your swimsuit.

Try to avoid using tanning products with a lot of oil in them as this will break down the elastic in the swimsuit. Instead of using tanning oils, go for a water based SPF that will not only protect your skin, but your swimsuit too.

Extra Tricks and Tips

Have a good rotation of swimsuits packed in your suitcase! It is best to avoid continually wearing the same bathing suits every day for swimming in the sea and pool as this can increase the level of damage and expose the swimwear to high temperatures and chemicals.

Think about how long you've had your swimwear as swimsuits stretch out overtime. Remember, there's nothing wrong with giving it all a little spruce up using our swimwear care guide!
