Why Add 4 Inches To Bra Band Size

Tips and advice to answer the question - do I need to add 4 inches to my bra band size when measuring my bra size?

WHY ADD 4 INCHES TO BRA BAND SIZE

We have recently been asked about how to measure to get the correct bra size and when we posted our bra measuring guidance we were asked why add 4 inches to the bra band size. This is a very good question and we thought it would be useful to answer the question.

We have found that it's been the same since bras where first made. Previously bras were made with less elastic in them and it was advised to add the four inches on to get the correct band size.

Do I Need To Add 4 Inches To My Bra Size?

Customers wearing better/more expensive bras, older customers or customers who often experience their bra getting tighter at the end of the day may benefit from adding the 4 inches to their bra band size.

We have noticed that nowadays the better, more expensive bras are made firmer with less elastic in them and you need the extra four inches to get the correct size and make sure you are comfortable.

However you can find that some cheaper bras/brands have more elastic in the bras and the four inches are not always needed as you have the extra stretch in them.

Older customers can sometimes find that their bras gets tighter by the end of the day. We would generally recommend you fasten a new bra on the longest hooks but if you experience tightness later in the day, as some people do, you definitely need to add the 4 inches and fasten on a tighter hook when you first put your bra on and slacken as the day progresses. A bra that is too tight does you, your clothes and your bra no favours.

Please note that our measuring guide is just a guide to help you find your size. We find that bra size depends not only on the measurements but also on your body shape, breast shape, age and bra style. Bra sizes and bra band sizes may vary between brands. We always advise you to use your experience as well as the guide. If your happy in your current size you probably won't be reading this.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR BRA SIZE

To check your bra size and bra fit, you need two measurements which are the underbust and overbust measurements. Step 1 and Step 3 below explains how to take these measurements.

UNDERBUST MEASUREMENT – BRA BACK SIZE

  • Using a measuring tape, Measure (in inches) directly under your bust - your under bust measurement, keeping the tape measure tight and level all around your body.

  • Add 4ins if the underbust rib cage measurement obtained is an even number of inches. Eg. if your underbust (ribcage) measurement is 30inches add 4ins to obtain bra size 34.

  • Add 5ins if the underbust (ribcage) measurement obtained is an odd number of inches. Eg. if your underbust (ribcage) measurement is 31ins, add 5inches to obtain bra size 36.

OVERBUST MEASUREMENT – BUST SIZE

  • Measure (in inches) round the fullest part of your bust to determine the cup size and cup volume.

  • Keep the tape level all the way around your body.

  • We recommend wearing your best fitting bra when measuring your bust size.

  • If the bust measurement is: Same as your bra size, your cup size is A - the same cup volume.

  • 1inch more gives cup size B - you are a B cup.

  • 2inches more gives cup size C.

  • 3inches more gives cup size D.

  • 4inches more gives cup size DD.

  • 5inches more gives cup size E and so on through F, FF and G. See our bra cup size chart below.

BRA CUP SIZE CHART

The difference between your back and your bust size measurement will give you your cup size. Different manufacturers use different bra sizing methods. Use the bra cup size chart below to help find your cup size.

AN EXAMPLE BRA MEASUREMENT

An example: Underbust measurement of 30in + 4in = Bra size 34 Overbust measurement of 34in = Cup A. So the correct fitting would be 34A.
