Are you wearing the correct bra size? Do you have problems with straps slipping, wires gaping or digging in, bra riding up or cups overflowing? If so then you may be wearing the wrong bra size. It's important, especially if you are heavy breasted, to check your size every once in a while as your breast size can change over time.
We can help with how to fit a plus size bra properly. It's good to know when it's time to have a bra fitting.
1. When to Get A Bra Fitted
We recommend that you should have a bra fitted regularly. If you feel that the bra doesn't sit correctly any longer it is definitely time to measure yourself again. There are a number of occasions in a women's life when you should consider having a bra fitting:
- During pregnancy and after pregnancy/breast feeding.
- When you lose weight or gain weight.
- When undertaking an exercise regime.
- After any type of surgery that may increase or decrease the size of your breasts.
- When your bra feels too small or too big.
Are you experiencing discomfort with your current bra. Over the years we have found that there are common problems that ladies suffer from when wearing a bra.
2. Does Your Current Bra Fit Well?
A well fitting and supportive bra will be comfortable but how do you know if the bra is fitted correctly?
Below is a quick reminder of what to look for in a good fitted bra:
- The bra should be quite firm around the body and ideally fitted on the loosest 3rd eye adjustment.
- Shoulder straps should sit lightly on your shoulders.
- Breasts should be well enclosed within the cup. Deeper full coverage cups work best for a fuller bust.
- Centre front going back reasonably well to chest wall and not sticking out.
- Snug fit at neck and underarm edges (not too tight and not gaping).
3. Are You Experiencing Some Bra Problems
Finding a bra which will properly fit for heavy breasts and plus size can be quite tricky. If your bra doesn't fit well then the following tips are a guide to ensure that you get the correct fit and will help you to fit a plus size bra properly.
Bra rides up at back . . . usually this means the back size is too small - try a bigger band size (46 instead of 44)
Band digs in . . . order one band size larger (46 instead of 44) or opt for a bra with a wider band.
Sides bulge . . . order one band size larger (46 rather than 44) or choose a style that provides more cup coverage and dipper underarms, make sure that the seam under your arms sits behind the bust and that it is not sitting on breast tissue.
Overflowing cups . . . order one cup size larger (F to G)
Cup is too big and puckering up ...try a smaller cup size keeping the back the same size
Shoulders are sore . . . loosen the bra straps or opt for a bra with wider, or padded straps
Bustline sags . . . shorten straps, try a style with more stretchy fabric, try a smaler cup size, this gives more support and a better bust line, opt in for a different style
Underwires pinch or poke . . . order one cup size larger (F to G) or try a non-underwire seamless cup style
Straps slip . . . tighten straps or opt for bra with wider straps, and if you have narrow shoulders go for a ‘racer style’ back this crossover effect at the back prevents the shoulder straps slipping. try bigger band size as straps can slip if the bra is too small
Lopsided bust (one breast larger than the other which is not unusual) an elasticated lace cup will mould to your shape.
If you think you are in the wrong bra size then you will need to check your measurements so you can find the best fitting plus size bra for your size.

5. How To Measure For A Bra
A brief overview of how to measure for a bra and plus size bra:
- Start by measuring your under bust whilst wearing a bra. Pull fairly tight and measure in inches.
- Once you have measure your under bust, now measure over the fullest part of the bust, again this should be measure in inches.
- Now you have your two measurements, the first measurement (under bust) you need to add four or five inches to in order to find the correct band size as an equal number. For example if you measured a 38 you would add four inches to reach a 42, if you were a 39 you would add five inches to reach a 44.
- Then you need to take away your under bust measurement (excludind the extra inches you added) from your over bust. This will provide you with you cup measurement. Every inch counts as a cup size. For example 0 inches difference will be an A Cup, 1 inch will be a B cup and so on.
- You should now have your final measurement! Use this size to buy your bra’s, please note that this is just a guide, everybody is shaped differently and unfortunately we cannot produce a perfect guide for everyone. At the end of the day, you know best which fit works for you. Each brand fit differently as some do double cup sizes whereas others don’t.
